Travel insurance is a legally binding contract made between the policyholder and the insurance company, be it a single trip or an annual travel policy. As with most legal documents, travel insurance policies can be quite confusing. Sometimes, travelers may become frustrated because of what they feel was a loophole in the insurance contract. Often what are perceived as loopholes simply are misunderstandings of the policy. To avoid experiencing this situation, it is important for policyholders to fully understand the policy.

Sometimes holidays have to be cancelled for various reasons. Sometimes these cancellations can be claimed as part of a travel insurance policy. However, sometimes travelers are surprised to see they claim has been denied. Often the reason for this is that the cancellation reason is not one covered by the travel insurance policy. For instance, some covered events would include illness, hurricane, terrorist incident and others. Knowing the specific reasons is key before making a claim. Some plans will let you add a rider known as cancel for any reason. This can be quite expensive.

Another reason that claims may be denied is that the documentation is incomplete. If a claim must be made, certain paperwork must be filed with the insurance company. Many times claims are delayed because the correct paperwork doesn’t get to the insurance company. This could be paperwork from the insured, the doctor, a hospital or other similar places. When a claim is made against cancellation insurance for medical reasons, there must be written documentation from a doctor. Until this is submitted, the claim cannot be processed. The doctor must specifically say that the illness necessitates that the trip be cancelled. Knowing up front what kind of documentation your insurance agency will require if a claim is made can help make the claims process go not only much more smoothly but much quicker as well.
